Kastelholm Castle is Åland's only medieval castle, which was built in the 1380s and continued to be built until the 1630s. Kastelholm Castle had its historic heyday when Åland belonged to the Swedish Empire, when Gustav Vasa ruled. Despite several fires, Kastelholm Castle is well preserved with many interesting monuments. Next to the castle are the open-air museum Jan Karlsgården and the prison museum Vita Björn. The famous Smakbyn is also located here, which is founded and run by Mikael Björklund. When visiting the castle or Vita Björn, tickets can be purchased outside.
