Within the kungsö battery there is an approximately 2 km long paved Russian military road and barracks area which during the years 1916-1918 was built on top of Dalsberg. The facility was part of a large line of defense that stretched from northern Åland to Dagö-Ösel in Estonia. The goal was to block off the Gulf of Finland and control the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia. To this day, there are shattered cannon stands and lookout towers, from which you can see the coast outside Mariehamn and the areas the battery is guarded. Jomala hiking trail also continues through the battery, and thus can be followed.
