Sålis batteriberg was once a Russian battery mountain with an 800 meter paved military road. The facility was part of a large line of defense that stretched from northern Åland to Dagö-Ösel in Estonia. The goal was to block off the Gulf of Finland and control the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia. Sålis batteri dates from the First World War and despite the careful demolition in 1919, there are many visible remains left after the battery and the buildings. At Hammarland's municipal office (and on Ålands Museum's website there is an online store where you can order a folder) there is a brochure about the battery.
